Let’s be real: trying to figure out what to wear for engagement photos can feel like a lot. You want to feel good, look good, and not stress about whether your outfit will clash with the backdrop or your partner’s look. Good news? It doesn’t have to be complicated.
After photographing many couples, I’ve found that these three tips make the biggest difference when it comes to outfit styling for your engagement photos.
Bright colors and busy patterns can sometimes distract from you in the photo. When in doubt, go with neutrals, soft tones, or earthy colors that photograph beautifully year-round. Think cream, tan, dusty blue, sage, rust, etc. These tones keep the focus on your faces and not your outfit clashing with the background.
Gone are the days of everyone wearing jeans and a white T-shirt. Instead of trying to match exactly, think of your outfits like a color palette. Choose 2–3 colors that work well together and mix textures (like denim, linen, knits) to add visual interest without being distracting.
The best engagement photos happen when you feel confident and comfortable. If something feels too tight, too trendy, or just not you—skip it. Wear something that feels like an elevated version of your everyday style. You’ll feel so much more at ease in front of the camera, and trust me, it shows.
