Personal Branding Photos: What to Expect & Why It’s Worth It

← back to blog index

Branding photo for nail tech

Every business owner deserves photos that make them feel confident. Personal branding photos tell the full story of who you are and what you do. It also helps your audience get to know you more.

As a Virginia-based branding photographer, I work with female entrepreneurs who are ready to show up online with imagery that actually reflects their brand. In this article, I’ll walk you through what a branding session includes, whether it’s right for your business, and what to expect from start to finish. I’ll also share brand photography examples for inspiration.

What are personal branding photos?

Personal branding photos are professional images that represent you and your business. They go beyond a simple headshot to show your personality, your process, and what makes your brand unique.

Think of branding photos as a visual introduction to who you are. When someone lands on your website or scrolls your Instagram, your photos are often the first thing they notice. Strong branding imagery builds trust before you ever say a word.

Personal branding photography is specifically designed to give you a cohesive, on-brand gallery you can use across all of your marketing material.

Personal Branding Photos vs. Headshots: What’s the Difference?

A personal branding session goes way beyond the typical headshot.

While you’ll walk away with updated headshots, that’s only part of it. A branding session captures your story — your values, your energy, and the vibe of your business.

A personal branding photoshoot typically includes:

  • Headshots
  • Lifestyle imagery
  • Action shots of you working
  • Candid moments
  • Flat lays of your tools or products

Who needs a personal branding photoshoot?

Personal branding sessions are a great fit for anyone who runs their own business and shows up as the face of it. Whether you’re a one-person business or have a team, professional photos can help you make a great first impression.

  • Coaches and consultants – Create authority and rapport before a client ever reaches out.
  • Creatives and artists – Show off your style through imagery that speaks for itself.
  • Health and wellness professionals – Feel approachable, credible, and easy to connect with.
  • Makeup artists and hairstylists – Showbase your work and build trust with your audience.
  • Small business owners – Finally retire your outdated headshot and create images you’re proud of.

What’s included in a personal branding session?

Every photographer offers something a little different, but here’s what a branding session typically includes:

  • Location scouting – Your photographer can help you find a space that fits your brand and goals for your images.
  • Planning – Communicate to iron out the details, including creative direction, location(s), outfits, etc.
  • A variety of shots – Different images to fit your business and vibe can include headshots, lifestyle images, action imagery, tools of the trade, and details.
  • Curated guidance – Get personalized planning support, inspiration ideas, or help with poses.
  • Online photo gallery – A few weeks after your session, you’ll get edited, high-resolution images that you can download and use however you’d like.

In my full branding experience, professional hair and makeup is included so you can arrive camera-ready for your session. You’ll also work with a personal stylist on wardrobe planning to make sure your outfits complement your brand and photograph beautifully.

Why Personal Branding Photography Matters for Your Business

A branding session is more than pretty pictures. It’s about highlighting who you are and what your business is all about.

Here’s why you need personal branding photos for business:

  • People trust people – Your ideal clients or customers don’t want to buy from a faceless business. Photos help people get to know, like, and trust  you — this is what motivates them to invest.
  • First impressions are everything – When someone finds you online, your images speak before you do. Are they sending the right message? Do they reflect your values and vibe?
  • Stock photos and selfies are out – Unique, professional photos that reflect your brand can actually help you stand out and build trust.
  • Consistency builds recognition – Cohesive images across your website, social media, and other marketing materials strengthen your brand identity.

How to Use Your Brand Photos

A branding session is an investment in your business. It provides you with a gallery of professional, versatile images you can use in so many ways.

Here’s how you can put them to work:

  • Website – Sprinkle them across your website, including your home, about, and service pages.
  • Social media – Ditch the generic stock images and share your personal branding photos instead.
  • Email marketing – Add personality and credibility to your newsletters.
  • Profile photos – Refresh your LinkedIn, Facebook, and Google Business profile.
  • Business cards & print materials – Give everything from business cards to pitch decks a polished, on-brand look.

What to Expect on the Day of Your Session

Many people feel nervous or unsure about having professional photos taken. But knowing what to expect can help you feel confident and even enjoy the experience.

Here’s an idea of how a branding session flows:

  1. Arrive at your location – Whether it’s a rented studio, your workspace, or a local spot that fits your brand, we’ll agree on a location beforehand.
  2. Ease into the session – I’ll start with low-pressure shots to help you feel comfortable and loosen up.
  3. Walk through your planning guide – I’ll guide you through the types of photos we planned for prior to the session.
  4. Outfit change – Depending on your personal branding photo package, you may switch outfits during your session to change things up.
  5. Enjoy the experience – The best images often come from authentic moments throughout the session, so enjoy and be yourself.

How to Choose the Right Brand Photographer

The right photographer can make or break your experience. Fortunately, there are so many great branding photographers out there.

Start by searching Google or social media for photographers in your area. You might also ask other business owners you know for recommendations.

Once you have a few options, here’s what to look for:

  • Specialized experience – Brand photography is different from wedding or portrait work. Look for someone with experience in personal branding photos and a portfolio that reflects this.
  • A portfolio that resonates with you – Look for variety, personality, and images that match what you’re envisioning for your experience.
  • A clear process – A great brand photographer does more than show up and shoot. Look for someone with a clear process and who offers support throughout.
  • Good communication – Your photographer should be easy to communicate with and feel like a collaborative partner. When I work with clients, I want them to feel like I’m a reliable bestie helping them with a fun project.
  • Reviews and testimonials. See what past clients say, especially about the process and how the photographer made them feel during the session.

Personal Branding Photos: FAQs

What should I wear for a personal branding photoshoot?

What you wear for branding photos makes a huge difference in how your photos turn out. Here are a few tips I share with clients:

  • Stick to neutral, earth tones, or your brand colors – These tend to photograph well and keep the focus on you
  • Choose outfits you feel comfortable moving in – Wear something you can sit, walk, or laugh freely in
  • Avoid heavy patterns – Busy prints can be distracting and don’t always translate well on camera
  • Consider your location – Outfits that complement your shoot location pull the whole look together

With my full branding experience package, you’ll work with a personal stylist who does a video consultation to help plan your looks for the session. As an add-on, she can select your exact outfits and send purchase links directly to you, making the process even easier.

How long does a personal branding photoshoot take?

Most personal branding sessions run from 1 to 5 hours, depending on your package, the number of outfit changes, and how many locations are included. Your photographer should give you a clear timeline beforehand so you know exactly what to expect.

How much do personal branding photos cost?

Personal branding photography typically ranges from $300 to $3,000+, depending on your location, the photographer’s experience, and what’s included.

My branding photography collections range from around $400 to $2,300, depending on the package.

Where are personal branding photos taken?

The location for a personal branding photoshoot depends on your business and vision. A cleaning company might rent a home through Airbnb or Peerspace. A coach might shoot in a bright, airy studio. A baker might use their own kitchen.

The goal is to find a space that feels like your brand. When I work with clients, we brainstorm location ideas together to find a place that perfectly fits the vibe.

Do I need personal branding photos if I already have a headshot?

A headshot is a great start, but it’s only one image. Personal branding photos give you an entire gallery of images built around your business. They show more of who you are, what you do, and how you work.

If you’re actively marketing your business online, a full branding session gives you a lot more to work with. And if you’re not ready for a full session, many branding photographers offer mini sessions.

Personal Branding Photos: Conclusion

You’ve worked hard to build your business. Your photos should show that.

If you’re ready to swap outdated selfies for imagery that actually reflects who you are, let’s make it happen. I work with entrepreneurs and business owners across Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Northern Virginia, Richmond, and the DC area to create the perfect branding imagery.
