If you’re curious how to pose for wedding photos, I’ve got you. Most people aren’t used to posing for photos for several hours, not to mention how important your wedding day is. But you don’t need to be a pro to look and feel your best in your wedding pictures.
As a Virginia-based wedding photographer, I’ve worked with so many couples who walked into their wedding day feeling unsure about posing and walked away with photos they absolutely loved.
Here’s the thing — you don’t have to have any experience in front of a camera to get beautiful wedding photos. My job is to guide you every step of the way so you always know where to stand, what to do with your hands, and how to just be yourselves.
In this article, I’m sharing 10 practical tips on how to pose in wedding photos, including couple poses, how to pose for group wedding photos, and bridal portrait tips. Whether you’re a natural in front of the camera or the thought of posing makes you want to hide, these tips will help you feel confident and relaxed on your wedding day.
Let’s be real — posing for photos can feel a little awkward at first, especially on one of the biggest days of your life. While most couples feel this way at the start, it usually doesn’t take long before you forget the camera is even there. The key is to be yourself, have fun, and let your photographer guide you when needed.

A good wedding photographer knows what they’re doing and can make sure your photos are perfect. They’re there to direct you, adjust your positioning, help you feel comfortable, and answer any questions you might have. When I work with couples, I act as their BFF to help them have fun and look great.
You can even share inspiration photos with your photographer before your wedding day. I also recommend doing an engagement session to practice being in front of the camera and get comfortable with your photographer.
Some of the most beautiful wedding photos happen when couples stop thinking about the camera and start focusing on each other. Instead of staring straight into the lens, look at your partner and interact with them. You might laugh at an inside joke, whisper something sweet, or just take a quiet moment to soak it all in.
Sharing genuine reactions and real emotions is what makes your photos feel authentic. Try being present with each other, and your photographer will take care of the rest.

Standing completely still can leave you with photos that feel stiff and posed. Movement, whether that’s walking around or dancing, can feel more natural and add personality to your photos.
Your photographer can also offer tips during different moments for this. They might ask you to walk towards the camera holding hands or share a dance. Have fun and be open to all of it because this also makes for great wedding day memories.
Most of us have our “good side,” so it’s okay to lean into that for your photos. You can also make small adjustments, like lifting your chin and shifting your body, for more options with photos.
That said, try not to overthink this. Make adjustments as you think about it and throughout the day, you’ll naturally settle into positions that feel good for you. Your photographer has also done this many times and knows exactly how to highlight the better angles.

When posing for wedding photos, you might wonder what to do with your hands. Honestly, most people feel awkward with their hands, but using them intentionally can help.
During your photos, you can:

Tension in your face can show up in photos more than you’d think, so this is worth practicing before your wedding day. Relaxing your jaw and forehead instantly softens your expression and makes you look more at ease. And if you tend to force a big smile, try thinking of something that genuinely makes you happy for a softer, more natural smile.
Your photographer may also crack a joke to get a real laugh out of you, so just go with it. They’ll also take candid photos of you interacting with your partner, wedding party, and loved ones — and these make for some of the best wedding photos.
Wedding party photos are some of my favorite shots. Some of the most memorable moments and best photos are when you’re enjoying this time together, sharing a toast, or posing for a fun photo with your wedding party. There are so many great ideas for posing with your wedding party, so you can use these for inspiration.
When I photograph weddings, we coordinate immediate family portraits ahead of time to ensure everything runs smoothly and efficiently. I also guide and pose your wedding party to create a variety of group shots that feel natural, fun, and dynamic.
Don’t be afraid to be silly and have fun — these are usually the shots you’ll love the most.

Getting the perfect group photos with your guests can feel stressful, especially when you’re trying to chat with and get pictures with everyone. But the key is to enjoy the experience. The more relaxed and playful everyone is, the better your pictures will be.
At your reception, chat and dance freely. These natural moments can make for the best photos. When posing for group wedding photos, stand close together and follow your photographer’s direction.
Bridal portraits are such a special part of your wedding day, and the best ones come from brides who let their personality shine through. Rather than trying to replicate a pose you saw on Pinterest, think about how you want to feel in your photos. Whether it’s confident, feminine, or joyful, let your vibe guide you.
Your photographer will also suggest poses and angles that are most flattering for you, but the most beautiful thing you can bring to your portraits is being yourself. Genuine moments also help tell the story of your wedding day, so laugh freely, take a quiet moment to reflect, or anything else that comes up.

Your wedding day is one of the happiest days of your life, and you deserve to feel amazing in your photos — exactly as you are. It’s easy to get in your head about how you look, but try to appreciate your authentic self.
Instead of focusing on any insecurities you may have, focus on the love and joy happening around you on your special day. When you feel good on the inside, it shows on the outside and in your photos.
The best way to pose for your wedding photos is to let your photographer guide you, stay present with your partner, and let go of the pressure to look perfect. The most beautiful wedding photos come from couples who show up authentically and have fun with each other and loved ones on their wedding day. A great wedding photographer will also walk you through poses and help you feel comfortable in front of the camera.
A few simple adjustments can make a big difference in how you look in photos. Slightly angling your body instead of standing straight on to the camera, keeping your arms slightly away from your body, and standing tall with your shoulders back can all help create a flattering pose. Your photographer can also share suggestions during your wedding day so that you’re not overthinking your poses.
Looking and feeling your best in wedding photos is really about confidence and comfort more than anything else. Wearing something you feel great in, doing a hair and makeup trial beforehand, and getting plenty of rest the night before all help. On the day of, focus on the joy of the occasion rather than how you look. Small posing tips like good posture, relaxed shoulders, and angling your body slightly can be flattering for anyone — but the most important thing is that you enjoy the experience and feel like yourself.
Looking awkward in photos usually comes down to tension and overthinking. The more relaxed and present you are, the more natural your photos will look. Try to avoid stiff poses by staying loose — shift your weight, move your hands, and interact with your partner rather than standing still. Candid moments and movement almost always photograph better than forced poses.
Having an engagement session with your photographer beforehand can also help you get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day.
There’s no single most flattering bridal pose because every bride is different. That said, a few poses tend to work well for most brides: holding your bouquet just below your waist with your elbows slightly bent, angling your body at about 45 degrees to the camera, and looking slightly over your shoulder for a soft, elegant feel. For a more candid look, walk slowly, laugh freely, or look down at your dress to create beautiful, natural portraits. Your photographer will help you find the poses that feel and look the best.
Posing for wedding photos doesn’t have to be intimidating — and can actually be a really fun experience. The best photos come from trusting your photographer, focusing on your partner, enjoying group shots, and being kind and true to yourself.
