Planning for the perfect branding session can feel exciting but overwhelming. This guide walks you through everything — from choosing your location to posing for photos. Whether you’re searching for branding photoshoot ideas or curious what to expect overall, you’re in the right place.

Your location sets the tone for the entire experience and gallery, so it’s one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your session. The best location feels like an extension of your brand. A house cleaner might rent a gorgeous Airbnb home. A wellness coach might choose a bright, airy studio. A baker might shoot right in their own kitchen.

When my clients already have a spot in mind, I’m always happy to work with that. But it’s okay if you don’t because finding the right location is part of the planning process.

When choosing a location, you can consider: 

  • Rented studios – These are often easy to style for almost any brand and offer a clean, bright, and versatile space.
  • Airbnb or Peerspace spaces – These are ideal for a specific aesthetic, like a cozy home office, a modern loft, or a stylish kitchen.
  • Home Studio List – This is a photographer’s go-to resource for finding unique, photography-friendly spaces.
  • Your own workspace – The office or studio you already use is an authentic and meaningful backdrop for a branding photography session.
  • Outdoor locations – Natural light is amazing for photos, so you might go with a local park, city street, or outdoor patio.

What to Bring to Your Branding Photoshoot

A branding session is so much more than just bringing your laptop and planner. When I take personal branding photos for clients, we really dig into what you use for your business. 

I like to get creative with props because they can help branding photos feel authentic and specific to your business. Props are often the items you actually use day to day.

Your photographer will guide you through your shot list, so you don’t need to figure this out alone. But having a few branding photoshoot ideas in mind helps you think through what makes the most sense for your brand. 

When I have planning calls with clients, we walk through types of photos and hand-select Pinterest inspiration together. From there, I build a planning guide so we go into your session with a clear direction and shot list.

Here’s a breakdown of the most common types of shots included in a branding session:

  • Headshots – Classic, polished portraits are the foundation of any branding gallery. They can work across social media profiles, your website, and press features.
  • Lifestyle headshots – These are a step beyond the traditional headshot for more authentic photos. You might laugh, hold your coffee, or sit at your workspace. 
  • Action shots – Photos of you doing what you do are some of the most meaningful. This may be writing, creating, coaching, cooking — whatever your work looks like in action.
  • Flat lays – Overhead shots of your tools, products, or workspace are great for social media and website design.
  • Detail shots – Close-ups of the little things, like a product label, your business card, or your hands at work, add texture and depth to your gallery.

Posing for branding photos can be as simple or as creative as you want. A mix of poses gives your gallery more variety and keeps things interesting. During sessions, I offer guidance every step of the way so nothing feels awkward or forced.

  • Standing with arms crossed or hands in pockets – Strikes the perfect balance between confident and approachable

Tips for Posing Like a Pro

Posing can be uncomfortable, especially if you don’t know what to do. These tips can help you relax and enjoy the experience.

  • Don’t go stiff – Take a breath and move around between shots.
  • Create movement – Make adjustments throughout poses, like shifting your weight, turning your body, and tilting your head. 
  • Let yourself laugh – While it might feel awkward at first, try laughing out loud for genuine shots.
  • Have fun – It’s not every day you get to take professional photos, so have fun with it. This usually creates the best photos, too.

What colors should I avoid for headshots?
